We often think that excess weight is a major problem affecting how one may feel about their appearance. If you have cellulite, you understand how intensely frustrating this problem can be regardless of your weight. It has only been relatively recently that science has confirmed the separateness of cellulite and excess weight. Historically, it has been believed that, if you work out enough and diet enough, you might be able to beat this common condition. We now realize that trying out out-work and out-diet, or even out-surgery cellulite just does not work. Fortunately, findings have led to new innovations. QWO is one of them. It is a non-surgical service that we are thrilled to offer in our comfortable, friendly office.
If you are interested in settling your battle with cellulite once and for all, contact the office of Dr. Charles Chalekson today to schedule your QWO cellulite treatment in San Luis Obispo County.
QWO® is an injectable cellulite treatment utilized in our Templeton office that the FDA has approved for the correction of buttocks cellulite in adult women. The drug contains collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes, which are enzymes that degrade collagen. Normally, we want to hold on to the collagen that our body makes as long and strong as possible. However, when it comes to cellulite, the fibrous bands that cause these dimples are made up of Type I and Type II collagen, primarily, which are exactly the types that QWO targets.
Cellulite is a condition in which the fibrous bands that tether the skin to the underlying muscle are offset by fatty tissue pushing outward. Keep in mind, however, that cellulite is not a “fat” problem. We need some fatty tissue on the body. Women are designed to hold a little extra fat in areas like the buttocks and thighs, which then makes them more susceptible to cellulite. That said, because thin women have cellulite, we know that it is the tension of the connective tissue fibers that is mostly to blame for dimples on the skin. QWO disintegrates those fibers. The process is referred to as Enzymatic Subcision and Remodeling (ESR™). It occurs when the active ingredients in QWO absorb into the target area. There, the enzymes degrade the collagen that makes up the fibrous septae that are pulling on the skin. As these fibers break down, the skin is released to lie smooth and dimple-free.
QWO has been carefully studied through clinical trials involving thousands of people of a wide age range. The most common side effects noted during these trials included temporary discomfort, itching, skin firmness, bruising, redness, itching, swelling, and a warm sensation on the skin. There is a very slight risk of an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to QWO. After your initial QWO treatment in San Luis Obispo County, expect significant bruising to occur. This is not unsafe and is very common. It is thought that the bruising that results after the initial round of injections relates to the minor breakdown of collagen in the blood vessels surrounding the treatment area. The blood vessels recover quickly, but not before some minor leakage into surface tissue.
The treatment protocol, based on findings from clinical trials, involves a series of three appointments scheduled at three-week intervals. After the third round of injections, patients noticed remarkable improvements in their skin. During each visit, Dr. Chalekson may treat up to 12 cellulite dimples on each side of the buttocks. The same dimples may be treated more than once. Subsequent treatments may also address dimples that had not been previously treated. This is because minor dimples may resolve with each treatment. By the end of your QWO treatment program in San Luis Obispo County, most if not all of your visible cellulite dimples should be treated.
You may not see significant improvement from your QWO treatment until your third and final appointment. After that point, the fibrous bands should have released most of their hold on the skin, resulting in noticeable smoothing. While more studies are needed to fully understand the longevity of QWO results, initial reports lead us to believe that patients may enjoy smoother skin for many years after their treatment.
