For some, this might include a desire for a revision to achieve a larger or smaller size than what their implants were originally. Other women simply no longer wish to have implants due to personal preferences. In less common circumstances, capsular contracture may occur, which is the process of excessive scar tissue forming around the implants. This scar tissue can cause discomfort and hardening of the breasts.
In some instances, Dr. Chalekson may recommend a breast lift after he removes your implants. This helps to repair any loose skin that was stretched by aging, pregnancy or the implants, reposition the remaining breast tissue, and relocate the nipple/areola complex to a more upright position. When implants are being replaced, this may not be needed.
During your consultation, Dr. Chalekson will discuss your motivation for implant removal and examine you to develop a customized plan for your particular surgery. During breast implant removal in San Luis Obispo County, implants are most frequently removed by using the same incisions that were created to insert them. Dr. Chalekson carefully extracts the implants and, if needed, removes any scar tissue or capsule that is present. If the capsule [that your body forms around your implants] are excessively thick or inflammed, it is generally recommended to attempt to remove as much of the capsule as feasibly possible.
If new implants are replacing the old ones, they will be inserted, and the incision will be closed. Generally breast implant removal surgery takes a few hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery and whether additional revision/adjustments are being performed.
Prior to your surgery, our medical team may advise you to stop taking certain medications, including any blood thinners, including aspirin, for two weeks (or more, as directed by your surgeon). You may also be required to make some lifestyle changes, including stopping cigarette smoking or any other nicotine products for at least a month before and after your procedure.
Be prepared to take a few weeks off after your surgery to recover. While you recover, you will not be able to lift anything or reach above your head for at least two weeks. Having someone to help you with tasks around the house or caring for children is advised.
