The Basics of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job or nasal surgery, was one of the first cosmetic procedures ever developed and is among the most frequently performed today. Different surgery techniques can help you achieve a variety of goals, including enhancing the nose for aesthetic reasons or reconstructing the nose to correct breathing issues. What to Expect After a Nose Surgery

Following a nose job in San Luis Obispo County, a splint is applied to the nose that should be worn for approximately 1 week. The splint will help protect your nose and prevent accidental damage during the healing process. You will likely experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising around the nose and eyes. These symptoms are normal and will start to fade after a few days. Periodic checks at the office will be scheduled so that our team can ensure you are healing well. The new shape of your nose will begin to be noticeable in 3-4 months as swelling disappears, but final results typically take up to a year. Discomfort is managed with prescribed medication, and complications are uncommon. Smokers must stop smoking (including nicotine patches and gum) at least four weeks before and after the surgery to avoid delayed healing.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

What is rhinoplasty and what can it correct?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that corrects nasal deformities by removing, rearranging, or reshaping bone and/or cartilage. It can reshape the tip of the nose, reduce or change its size, smooth bumps on the bridge, straighten a crooked nose, adjust nostril size, correct a deviated septum, and improve facial symmetry. It can be performed for aesthetic reasons or to address breathing issues caused by trauma, injury, or illness.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose, or if you experience difficulty breathing. A comprehensive consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is recommended to determine whether the procedure is right for you.

What should I expect during rhinoplasty recovery?

After surgery, a splint is applied to your nose for approximately one week to protect it during healing. Mild pain, swelling, and bruising around the nose and eyes are normal and typically fade within a few days. You will begin to notice the new shape of your nose within 3–4 months, though final results can take up to a year to fully appear.

Are there any pre-surgery requirements I need to follow?

Yes. If you smoke, you must stop at least four weeks before and four weeks after surgery. Smoking can significantly delay the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Your surgeon will provide a full list of pre-operative instructions during your consultation.

Does the practice serve patients outside of San Luis Obispo?

Yes. The practice welcomes patients from across California and the entire country, including surrounding communities such as Templeton, Paso Robles, and San Luis Obispo County. Consultations are available for prospective patients traveling from various locations.
