Restore sensation and emotional connection to reconstructed breasts with nerve reconstruction after mastectomy at Chalekson Plastic Surgery | MedSpa. Using advanced microsurgical techniques, Dr. Charles Chalekson reconnects nerves at the cellular level, helping patients regain feeling.
What Is Nerve Reconstruction After Mastectomy?
Nerve reconstruction after mastectomy is a technique designed to help restore feeling in the breast after surgery. During a mastectomy, small sensory nerves are often cut, which can lead to numbness. In this procedure, the surgeon reconnects those nerves to the tissue used to rebuild the breast. If there is a gap between the nerves, a small donor nerve (processed and safe for medical use) called an “allograft” may be used as a bridge, creating a pathway that allows the body’s own nerves to slowly grow and regain sensation over time.
When nerve reconstruction is performed along with a nipple-sparing mastectomy, special attention can be given to the nipple and areola area. This may improve the chance of recovering feeling in this sensitive region, which can enhance both physical comfort and emotional well-being. Sensation returns gradually and varies from person to person, but many patients appreciate the potential for a more natural, connected result.
